Hive Brand Guidelines

Welcome to our branding hub. These guidelines have been created to help you use our brand and assets, including our logo, messaging and content with ease—making sure all Hive collateral follow the same rules and work as part in the same Hive family.

Hive Design System Header Image

Logos

Line 14

The Hive logo is composed of our hive hexaganol symbol and a logotype set in Maax Rounded Regular. The horizontal logo is the primary logo and should be used in most instances. The monotone logo is used when the full colour master logo is not appropriate, for example when the background is a contrasting colour.

The Hive submark is our favicon. It is not regularly used on its own without text. It’s main use is on presentation decks in the top right corner, when the master logo is overpowering. It is also used on its own as a design element in illustrations when appropriate.

Hive logo examples in colour, monotone and white colourways.

Logo sizing

Line 14

The master logo and submarks should be kept at a readable size. The master logo should not be smaller than 130px x 54px and the submark 48.34px x 54px.

Hive Logo Sizing

Usage on backgrounds

Line 14

We need to be careful when choosing the correct logo to make sure it’s appropriate for the background.

When the background is dark, the logo-text should be white and when the background is light it should be dark.

When the background is a colour that clashes with one of the colours in the master logo, a suitable monotone logo should be used.

The background colour shouldn’t be so light that you cannot read the Hive text, and vice-versa with a dark background.

The master logo should not be used on a vibrant red (‘Watermelon’ or ‘Cinder’) background as it clashes with the outer hexagon.

Hive Logo Usage

Service areas

Line 14

We have six Hive platform features with logos, and the same rules apply to these logos as the master Hive logo.

When designing material around a specific platform feature we tend to use the same colour used for each feature. For example a Hive Surveying document would use Orange.

We use the icons when appropriate and when the full logo is not necessary.

Other brands

Line 14

We also have three other Hive brands with logos, and the same rules apply to these logos as the master Hive logo.

When designing material around a specific sub-brand, we tend to use the same colour used for that logo. For example a Hive In Session video would mostly use the colour ‘Aqua’.

Mental Health First Aiders

Line 14

Our Mental Health First Aiders have their own logo to be used on social graphics, presentations etc. As with the main logo the monotone version should be used on any contrasting backgrounds.

Typography

Line 14

National 2 is our primary font that we use the majority of the time. We use Medium for headings, when highlighting words, etc.

Maax Rounded is our secondary font that we use outside the main body of text. This could be in a graph, chart, illustration, etc. It isn’t to be used for long paragraphs of text.

Sometimes it’s not possible to use National 2 or Maax Rounded for example in Google slides or docs. So in this instance we use ‘Nunito’ and ‘Karla’.

Extended Colour Palette

Line 14

This is the full Hive extended colour library that contains a range of shades from light to dark around the primary and secondary palettes.

Hive Colours

Hive Guys

Line 14

Hive Guys are our character illustrations. They can be created in two forms: half size or full size.

Character heads and hands should be kept to a consistent size in relation to the body. Limbs are live strokes and the stroke width should match the size of the circular joint. Circular joints can be used to pose characters by anchoring the rotate tool to the center of the joint. Heads can be changed for profile or frontal styles.

Characters should be colourised in a monochrome or two tone palette. Lighter shades of the Hive colour palette may be used for skin tones.

Icons

Line 14

Hive Icons are used across all different brand touchpoints from marketing materials to website content.

The colours of the main and social icons can be changed to compliment a design using one of the brand palettes.

We pair the social icons with the Hive hexagon shape and the Hive values icons with globules in the colour ‘Honey’.

Hive wires

Line 14

Hive Wires are used all across our brand. Their primary use is as a design element across all hive branding materials from guides to social media assets.

Hive Wires Examples

Hive Globules

Line 14

Hive Globules are used behind illustrations or quotes to accentuate them. They can also be used around the edges of graphics sparingly.

Hive Globule Examples

Hive Wires and Globules Usage

Line 14

Hive Wires are generally only used around the outside edges of graphics. They’re used as decoration and pretty much involved in everything that we design; on e-book covers, social cards, etc. We use them with appropriate colours that compliment what we’re designing.

Solid globules have a bit more freedom, they are mainly used to accentuate things, we can use them behind a quote, behind an icon, image, illustration etc. We can use them around the edges of graphics alongside the wires but they should be used sparingly. The same colour rules apply as the Hive Wires.

Hive Wires and Globules Usage

Buttons and Labels

Line 14

Buttons and labels can be used on our website, marketing materials and printed documents.

Both follow the same principles as the main logo in regards to the background and text colour used. They need to be legible and use colours that contrast enough to ensure that they are accessible.
