AI Engineer (Remote)

The Gist
The Role

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and evolve scalable, secure systems using Node.js and TypeScript, with a strong focus on clean, extensible APIs.
  • Architect and implement features across our SaaS product, taking ideas from proof-of-concept through to production systems used by real customers.
  • Implement and iterate on AI and LLM technologies, including:
    • Agent-based architectures and tool-calling patterns
    • Workflow orchestration for multi-step reasoning and insight generation
    • Optional human-in-the-loop review and validation workflows
    • Observability, evaluation, and reliability of AI inputs and outputs
    • Translate existing statistical data (such as regressions) into AI analysable format
  • Architect applied AI and data techniques to surface meaningful, actionable insights rather than raw data or dashboards.
  • Build and evolve solutions that maximise value from existing datasets and APIs, avoiding unnecessary data expansion to accelerate delivery.
  • Act as a technical leader within Hive, setting architectural direction and raising engineering standards across teams.
  • Design and operate secure, multi-tenant services on AWS, with a strong understanding of technology suitability, cost, scalability, and security.
  • Partner closely with Product, Data, Professional Services, and other stakeholders to translate business and customer problems into technical solutions.
  • Clearly communicate technology capabilities, trade-offs, limitations, and risks to non-technical audiences.
  • Take ownership of initiatives from concept through delivery, iteration, and long-term evolution.
  • Help to drive Hive’s long-term product roadmap, balancing new features, bug fixes, and technical debt.
  • Stay up to date with emerging trends in software engineering, architecture, and AI, and apply relevant learnings to Hive’s platform.
  • Mentor senior engineers and emerging leaders on strategy, execution, and influence.
  • Anticipate risks and obstacles that could affect delivery or system health.
Requirements

Technical Expertise

  • Expert-level experience with Node.js and TypeScript, designing and maintaining production systems using them.
  • Experience with Mastra.ai (or similar agentic frameworks), including:
    • Agent and workflow orchestration
    • Context and memory management
    • MCP, Tooling, and API integrations
    • Observability, evaluation, and cost awareness
  • Deep experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and related technologies

  • Strong understanding of modern architectures, including microservices and event-driven systems.
  • Proven ability to design systems that evolve over time as models, tools, and requirements change.

You will have excellent working knowledge of most of the following:

  • Run-time: Node.js (or modern equivalents)
  • Languages: TypeScript (essential), JavaScript (ES6+)
  • Back-end: Express.js, GraphQL
  • Infrastructure & Tooling: Docker, Terraform
  • Databases: MongoDB Atlas (including Search and Data Federation), Redis
  • Front-end: React
  • Styling: CSS, Emotion, styled-system
  • Cloud: AWS (S3, SQS, SNS, Batch, Lambda, ECS, API Gateway)
  • CI/CD: Continuous Integration and Deployment
  • Source Control: Git
  • Testing: Jest, Playwright; BDD and TDD methodologies
  • Monitoring & Logging: CloudWatch, Sentry
  • Project management: Jira
