What brought them to Hive

Back in 2019, Percy Hedley Foundation tried in-house surveys to gather employee feedback, but it fell short. They struggled with survey design and data interpretation limiting actionable insights for managers.

They quickly saw that they were missing crucial insights into how employees were feeling, relying only on anecdotal feedback. This lack of comprehensive data made it hard to develop an effective people strategy and create the culture they wanted. To move forward, they needed a more rounded and accurate understanding of their employees’ sentiments. Seeking a better solution, they opted for Hive.

“Harry spent a lot of time going through how to use the platform and how to set up a survey and looking at questions. Really really supportive, lots of training, lots of resources, and every time they’ve got a query people always come back supportive.”

Bringing data together for a clear picture of employee sentiment

Since implementing Hive, Percy Hedley Foundation has integrated it seamlessly with other formal and informal communication channels, including appraisals and HR initiatives.

This integration has allowed them to combine insights from various sources, providing a clearer picture of employee sentiment. As a result, the foundation has started to see alignment between the themes emerging from Hive surveys and their four key priorities: wellbeing and balance, attraction and retention, compassionate leadership, and a people-first culture.

Evolving organisational strategy with People Science

Over the last three years, Percy Hedley Foundation has teamed up with People Science for key initiatives focused on building cultural readiness and strategizing for the future. This partnership has used all the People Science pillars: Strategy, Craft, Insights, and Action. They’ve conducted deep dives with the Deep Dive Report and Executive Insights Reviews, helping them understand how the organisation operates and how employees feel. These insights uncover the true story behind their data and guide the best plan of action for areas needing attention.

These insights have also helped them achieve initial goals, such as aligning employee voices with organisational strategy and making it a key topic for the executive team. They’ve also pinpointed areas where the culture varies within the organisation, giving the leadership team confidence that they’re on the right track. Now, they’re diving deeper to tackle their top priorities.

Real-time survey results

The foundation has also benefited from the real-time survey results provided by Hive, enabling managers to take ownership of their team’s feedback and drive engagement initiatives.

This has allowed managers to come up with creative ways to get more responses, which has really ramped up how everyone gives feedback. People are now more engaged and they have a better handle of what’s going on across the organisation.

“It’s good that HR leaders can see the real-time survey results so that they can inform managers to help boost response rates, and think of different ways to get people engaged and motivated to fill out the surveys.”

Consistency is key to a successful employee voice initiative

One of the significant benefits of using Hive is the consistency it brings to their feedback process. Employees have become familiar with the platform, leading to increased engagement and response rates.

“With Hive people feel like they have a voice, and it’s all part of a bigger picture. When employees see their annual survey, they recognise that Hive is giving them the opportunity to have their say.”

Building a transparent organisational culture

The confidentiality offered by Hive has encouraged employees to voice their opinions openly, contributing to a more honest and transparent organisational culture. This, in turn, has empowered their HR leaders to address issues more effectively and initiate difficult yet necessary conversations.

“Being able to have both quantitative and qualitative data from 75% of our population is great. Prior to that it would have been anecdotal feedback. There was also an element that not all voices were getting through as strongly as they should have been.

Now we feel more comfortable that we’re getting the voice of more people, not just those who shout loudest. We feel much more comfortable that the decisions we are making are based on a much more reliable source than previously.”
