The Secret Formula to Remote Working

Table of Contents

Just a few weeks ago, working remotely was only an option for a minority of people. But today, it’s a necessity for everyone who isn’t a key worker.

It’s a huge change, and most of us will be coming up against new challenges every day. So, we thought it would be a good idea to consult an expert and see what wisdom he might be able to impart when it comes to working from home.

Gareth Whalley, Global Director of D&I at a renowned drinks manufacturer, has been WFH for the past 15 years and he loves it. The flexibility and freedom it offers has allowed him to achieve a better balance in his life. It’s not without its drawbacks, though.

But never fear—our People Science Director, Ryan Tahmassebi, held a virtual lunch-and-learn session with Gareth to get to the bottom of how to get it right:

1. Start with yourself.

The most important thing is that you look after your own happiness and wellbeing. Make sure you take the time to exercise and socialise (virtually if necessary). And remember that it’s okay not to be okay; just make sure you talk to someone about it.

2. Be in control.

Working remotely means autonomy. There’s nobody there to look over your shoulder and it’s up to you to decide how your day will pan out. But that also means you have to take accountability for all aspects of your working life.

3. Routine isn’t always the answer.

Many people suggest implementing a strict structure to organise your day and ensure you don’t get distracted. But that won’t work for everyone. Gareth suggests approaching each day based on its own needs; look at what you have to get done, then plan out the best way to come at it. You now have more flexibility, so why not use it?

4. Think about your colleagues.

Remember that while some people will adapt easily and enjoy this new way of working, others will struggle. Try to keep in touch with people and help them where you can. And if you’re a manager: recognition has never been more important.
